Anti Ageing Superfoods

Anti-ageing is one of the hottest topics of the 21st century. Scientists now believe that eating certain types of food may be the solution to looking more youthful and living longer – and the good news is it’s never too late to start.

All fruit and vegetables contain antioxidants, but “superfoods” provide the strongest antioxidant properties, providing the highest levels of protection from free radicals (Free radicals are unstable by-products of the chemical reactions taking place in our bodies) Antioxidants neutralise the effects of free radicals and so help to prevent cell damage. Some Anti-ageing super foods and their benefits include:

Apples – For healthy skin, lower blood cholesterol levels and help to keep the digestive system healthy

Avocado – A good source of Vitamin E and essential fatty acids

Blueberries – The ultimate” superfood”. Believed to protect against a number of cancers, heart disease, asthma, arthritis, Alzheimers and to slow down mental ageing

Broccoli - Helps to improve and prevent skin problems and can delay the progression of age-related diseases such as impaired vision and blindness

Carrots - Often used in anti-ageing creams. Regular consumption can also reduce your risk from cancer, heart disease and stroke

Garlic - Has numerous benefits and can help to maintain a healthy heart and circulatory system. Also has antiseptic, antibacterial and antiviral properties

Nuts and seeds - Packed full of vitamins and minerals. Also a good source of mono-unsaturated fat, which can help to reduce the amount of cholesterol in your blood.

Oats - A real “supergrain”. Helping to lower cholesterol, absorb essential nutrients and maintain a healthy digestive system

Olives and olive oil - Have been found to plump up skin cells and smooth fine lines and wrinkles

Prunes - Provide a very high protection from free radicals. Also help to lower levels of cholesterol

Red Wine - Can help to protect against heart disease and circulatory problems. Sadly however, one glass a day is enough, too much and the benefits could be reversed!

Salmon - Can reduce the risk of coronary heart disease by 25%. Salmon is also great for healthy looking skin

Soya - Will gradually increase levels of oestrogen which helps skin maintain a healthy glow

Tea - A powerful protection against free radicals

Tomatoes - A powerful antioxidant which helps cell ageing and a potent anti-cancer agent. Also believed to be helpful in protection of heart disease

Turkey - An important, skin friendly protein which protects against lines and wrinkles. Also assists with our immune system’s function, in thyroid hormone metabolism and in reproduction

And finally don’t forget to drink plenty of water. Aim for 6-8 glasses a day and notice the difference in your skin.
