Acupuncturist's Arrival
Over the last decade, Niki Kinloch Bakshy has lived and studied oriental and alternative medicine in three continents: India, Europe and America. Niki was born in Edinburgh in 1976 and went to school in Perthshire. After doing a year’s foundation course at The Wimbledon School of Art in London, she decided that the world needed to be explored, so set off with some friends and a rucksack in1995.
Niki’s interest in alternative therapies was kindled while living in India where she qualified in Rieki levels 1 & 2 and learned about crystal healing. Moving to California in 1999 Niki studied Acupressure and Oriental related therapies at the Acupressure Institute at Berkley and having qualified she spent ten months training in traditional Native American medicine. |

She then realised that, in order to treat medical and emotional conditions at all levels, she needed to study Oriental medicine and so began a search for a school that allowed her to study in depth.
In 2003 she gained a place at The International College of Oriental Medicine (UK) in East Grinstead, England. This is one of the only colleges that combines TCM (traditional Chinese Medicine), Five Elements and the teaching of the ancient, pre-cultural revolution, Chinese art of acupuncture, Stems and Branches.
Students benefit from constantly updated international research and the opportunity to practice in the ICOM clinic that has operated since the 1970’s. Emphasis is on treating the causes of the patient’s symptoms, rather than just trying to alleviate them. As part of the four-year course, students also gain a Diploma in Swedish massage.
Settling Down
With a BSc (Hons) degree from Brighton University in Oriental Medicine and as a certified member of the British Acupuncture Council, Niki is able to tackle all conditions from mental and emotional, to physical ailments and diseases. Although primarily using acupuncture, Niki can call on a variety of techniques that complement each other depending on the needs of the patient.
Future plans include studying with the National Acupuncture Detoxification Association in the Bronx district of New York and a spell with Médecin sans Frontière working with trauma victims abroad.
Niki married her partner of 11 years, Nir Bakshy, in 2003 during a romantic ceremony at the standing stones of Lundin, Grandtully. While she was studying acupuncture, Nir was pursuing his dual occupation of motion capture animation technology and learning about the practical world of plumbing.
His qualifications include Corgi certification for boiler installation and alternative technology plumbing. Nir deals with conventional installations as well as converting existing systems to greener, energy-efficient use.
“I’m hanging up my traveling shoes and settling down for now.” Niki told Comment and, as proof, she is setting up her practice in Aberfeldy at the end of July. The couple are looking forward to their new life as part of the Highland Perthshire community.
